Migrating forum software without losing members or search traffic

Old forum software becomes a security risk, and switching platforms can modernize a community. A careless migration can also break years of links and confuse members. Plan it like a project.

1. Pick the destination and a converter

Most major platforms provide import tools or converters for common sources. phpBB has converters for some older packages (see the phpBB Knowledge Base), and Discourse publishes import scripts for many platforms, discussed on Discourse Meta. Check what each converter moves: members, password hashes (or whether members must reset passwords), posts, attachments, private messages and permissions.

2. Back up everything first

Take a full database and file backup of the old forum, and keep it. See how to back up your forum.

3. Do a test run on a copy

Run the conversion on a staging site. Check formatting (BBCode, quotes, embedded media), attachments, user groups and permissions. Fix the problems and run it again. Repeat until it's clean.

4. Preserve URLs with 301 redirects

Old thread URLs are in search results and linked from other sites. Map old URLs to new ones and set up permanent (301) redirects. Google's guidance on Google: site moves with URL changes explains how to keep search signals during a move. Then submit the new sitemap.

5. Plan the cutover

6. After launch

Watch for 404 errors and crawl errors in Search Console. Collect member feedback in a dedicated thread, and fix broken redirects quickly.
