Every forum owner eventually needs a backup: after a bad update, a hacked account, a hosting problem, or a mass spam cleanup gone wrong. A backup you've never restored is only a hope. Here's a simple routine.
mysqldump creates a SQL file of the database. Then compress the forum's directory with tar or zip.Match it to how much you can afford to lose. A busy forum should back up the database daily. A quiet one might do it weekly. Always take a fresh backup right before upgrades, extension installs or bulk deletes.
Keep at least one copy somewhere other than your web host, such as cloud storage or your own computer. If the hosting account is lost, backups stored on it are lost too. Keep several dated copies, not just the latest.
A few times a year, restore a backup to a test subdomain or a local install. Check that you can log in, that recent posts are there, and that attachments load.
Backups contain member emails and password hashes. Never leave them in a public web folder, and limit who can download them.
