Forums can rank very well because members answer real questions in their own words. They can also fill up with thin, duplicate and spammy pages. These basics follow Google's SEO Starter Guide.
The thread title becomes the page title, so encourage members to write specific ones ("Squat depth for long femurs?" rather than "Help!!"). Moderators can edit vague titles. Make sure your software puts the thread title first in the page's title tag.
Avoid session IDs in URLs where possible, because they create duplicate copies of the same page. Use canonical tags so each thread has one preferred URL. Most modern forum packages handle this, but older installs may need a setting or an extension.
An XML sitemap helps search engines find new threads. Google's Google: sitemaps overview explains the format. Many forum packages have a built-in or add-on sitemap. Submit it in Google Search Console.
Spam posts hurt both the community and how search engines view the site. Use approval queues for new members and add rel="ugc" or "nofollow" to user-posted links. See how to stop forum spam.
Use a responsive theme, compress images, and keep the software updated.
Start the first threads yourself with genuinely useful guides and questions, and link related threads together. See growing a new forum.
