Understanding DiscussionForumPosting and SocialMediaPosting Schema

Adding structured markup to your community helps search engines identify first-hand user perspectives and display them across search features such as Discussions and Forums. According to the Google Search Central Discussion Forum documentation, platforms where people share their own discussions can use DiscussionForumPosting—or its parent type, SocialMediaPosting—to clearly define user posts and replies.
3 Content Elements Eligible for the Post Body
When marking up a DiscussionForumPosting (or SocialMediaPosting), you must represent the core material of the topic using at least one of 3 distinct properties:
- text: Contains the complete written body of the message.
- image: Represents visual image content if the post centers on an image.
- video: Encapsulates media using a
VideoObject(including details like name, contentUrl, uploadDate, and thumbnailUrl).
If you are linking back to a main post from subsequent pages in a thread or from an archive board, this content requirement does not apply when pointing to that post via its external URL. If you are refining how your boards feed into search crawlers, check our guide on Forum SEO Basics: Getting Your Community Found in Search.
2 Core Rules for Author Identification
Search engines need clear attribution for every community contribution. The markup requires specific author properties:
- author: Must be defined as either a
Personor anOrganization. - author.name: The actual display name or username of the contributor (such as text representing the member).
Google also recommends adding author.url, which links directly to the member's specific profile page on your board. Author objects can additionally carry an agentInteractionStatistic showing their activity, such as their historical WriteAction user interaction count.
1 Required Date Format for Publication
Every original post requires a datePublished property. This value must strictly follow the ISO 8601 format, combining the exact date, time, and timezone offset. If a thread starter or reply has been edited later, you can optionally supply dateModified in the same ISO 8601 format. If no edits have taken place, there is no need to repeat the original publish date.
2 Structural Styles: Threaded Trees vs. Linear Streams
How you format your discussion markup depends on your community layout. As outlined in the Google Search Central Discussion Forum guide, community software generally handles replies in two ways:
- Tree structure: For forums with branching conversations, nest replies inside parent comments using nested
Commentobjects. - Linear sequence: For traditional flat forums, nest every reply directly under the original
DiscussionForumPostingas a comment in the order it appears on the page.
For threads that span across multiple pages, later pages can reference the primary thread URL while nesting only the comments present on that specific screen. Key Recommended Properties to Enhance Listings
Beyond the required author, date, and content fields, several optional properties provide deeper context to search systems:
- commentCount: An integer showing total responses, especially useful when all replies are not displayed on a single page.
- interactionStatistic: Captures engagement like a
LikeActionalongside its specificuserInteractionCount. - creativeWorkStatus: Set to
Deletedwhen a post has been removed by moderators but retained to maintain thread continuity. - digitalSourceType: Helps differentiate human contributions from automated or AI content using values like
TrainedAlgorithmicMediaDigitalSourceorAlgorithmicMediaDigitalSource.
Testing and Deploying Structured Data
Once you implement markup—either using JSON-LD or in-line Microdata to prevent duplicating text—validate the pages with the Rich Results Test to fix critical issues. Deploy a small batch of pages and check them with the URL Inspection tool to confirm Googlebot is not blocked by your robots.txt file, login requirements, or a noindex directive before requesting a recrawl.
