Forum moderation guide for new community owners
Good moderation is what separates a forum people return to from one that slowly fills with arguments and spam. Here is a simple system that scales.
1. Write short, specific rules
- Five to ten rules is plenty. Be concrete: "No personal attacks" beats "Be nice."
- Say what happens when rules are broken.
- Pin the rules in every main section.
2. Use a warning ladder
- Friendly note or edit.
- Formal warning.
- Short suspension.
- Ban.
Spam and illegal content skip straight to removal and ban.
3. Recruit moderators carefully
- Pick active, level-headed members who already help others.
- Start them with limited permissions on one section.
- Keep a private moderator area to discuss tricky calls.
4. Moderate in the open, discipline in private
Note publicly when a thread is locked or moved and why. Handle warnings to individuals through private messages.
5. Seed and steer content
Moderators are also hosts. Welcome new members, answer unanswered threads, and merge duplicates so useful answers are easy to find.
6. Keep a log
Most forum software keeps a moderator log. Review it monthly to spot repeat issues and keep decisions consistent.
